Interview with one of the best of the best Djs ever .. Marcel Freakin WOODS!

Marcel is a dutch DJ/Producer who have been in the field of trance and specially techtrance for a long time .. he made some massive tracks like : Tomorrow , The Bottle , BMP and also some colabs with tiesto (Dont Ditch) and Tulips & Chocolate' (with S.H.O.K.K.). In the last few years he played at some well-known festivals and parties like Trance Energy and Shockers, he is one of the best in his techtrance field.

Trance.nu: First of all, thank you for having us here in your studio.
The summer is almost at it’s end. I’m sure that you had a busy schedule with a lot of DJ gigs. Where have you played in the last few weeks?

Marcel: Last summer I’ve been to countries like Scotland, England, Sweden, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, and in the Netherlands on partys like : Defqon 1, Sensation, Decibel Outdoor , Frequence and the regular clubs.

Trance.nu: What was your favorite gig this summer?
Marcel: That was Scotland for sure! The ‘Inside Out’ in Glasgow was awesome! The people overthere are just great and really into the music!

Trance.nu: What do you like most; playing at big festivals like Innercity and Mysteryland or do you prefer DJ-ing in clubs like the Zino and the Matrixx for example?
Marcel: I prefer playing in clubs myself, because you can have more contact with the audience during your set. It doesn’t matter for me which club it is, as long as the people are there enjoying it and make a party, it’s good for me! But however big partys are really nice to.

Trance.nu: Almost every Sunday you play in afterclub Zino in Tilburg, in the South of the Netherlands at 6:00 in the morning. How do you manage to do this, even when you had a gig at Saturdaynight?
Marcel: Most of the time I have a gig at the Saturdaynight too. When I’m ‘early’ at home, around 4 or 5 in the morning, I’m going to sleep for an hour or sometimes for only 30 minutes. Around 5:30 I’m driving to the Zino. In the meanwhile I have a little stop to have breakfast at a tankstation and then I’m driving to the club. It’s just my work, but because it’s also still a hobby it’s still easy for me and looking forward to it each and every Sunday! And I never believed in drugs, it’s just getting your energy from the energy bank I think, and you have to give it back with interest.

Trance.nu: In your schedule I saw that you have gigs planned in countries like Belgium, Turkey, Germany and Estonia. Are there any countries that you never played in before and that you really like to play in?
Marcel: Yes, to be honest I can not wait to play somewhere in the United States. That would be nice in my opinion. I always wanted to go to New York, so who knows!

Trance.nu: At the moment people can vote for the DJ Mag Top 100. What’s your opinon about this list?
Marcel: Normally I’m not so into lists like this, but this year I started for the first time to do something with it at my homepage. It seems that (a lot of)clubs in England only want to book DJ’s that are in the Top 100, so it’s important to be in the list. Furthermore there’s been a lot of talking and discussion about this list, especially in the Netherlands since TiĆ«sto became number 1. A lot of people didn’t even know about the list, but now they do. So that are some reasons why I also mentioned the DJ Mag Top 100 at my homepage. The whole public relations thing, just like interviews and stuff like that is very important nowadays. I became a DJ because I loved the music and not the spotlights. Sometimes it really looks like something else, with all the interviews and stuff like that. I know that it’s just a part of the job. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t like interviews, but I prefer DJ-ing and producing music myself. Ofcourse I like to talk about music and the things that I’m doing, but the whole public relations thing and those DJ lists, well… it’s not my favorite hobby!

Trance.nu: How do you prepare for a DJ gig? Do you know before you start which tracks you are going to play or do you decide this just before your set is going to start?
Marcel: I always decide this just before I’m starting. I only planned my first records once. That was when I had to play at Sensation. For that gig I planned my first 3 records. But even then it’s just go with the flow, because you never know what’s going to happen in the crowd before your DJ booth.

Trance.nu: For ID&T you mixed the compilation ‘Hardtrance 4’. There were a lot of good reactions on this CD. Will there be a follow up from this one or will you do another mixcompilation in the near future?
Marcel: Well, I don’t like it when people put me in a box like “he’s a Hardtrance DJ” or something like that. I don’t want to be a Trance- or a Hardtrance DJ. A few years ago I started to use the word ‘Tech-trance’. Some people still think that I’m a Hardtrance DJ, but I don’t think that I’m a Hardtrance DJ myself. So that’s also one of the reasons why I don’t do hardtrance compilations anymore.

Trance.nu: Next to your work as a DJ, you are also an active producer. In the past your releases came out on your own label ‘Rytmic’, but nowadays your tracks like ‘Serenity’, ‘Time Is Running Out’ and ‘Static State’ are getting released on the ID&T label. Can we expect some releases from you again on ‘Rhytmic’?
Marcel: Well, at my own label I don’t release that much stuff anymore nowadays. Mainly because it’s a lot of work. You have to arrange everything yourself; the pressing, the marketing, the promotion etc. It really costs a lot of time and furthermore, it’s not easy with all the downloading and copying that’s happening, to earn the money back that you have to invest to release your productions. ID&T exactly knows how they have to handle with promotion / marketing etc. so that’s why I release the Marcel Woods tracks at ID&T. But there are still some other projects under different names that I release at other labels.

Trance.nu: In the past you worked together with producers like Nico Parisi, Yves Deruyter (Frequence Theme) and S.H.O.K.K. (Woodshokk - Tulips & Chocolate) for example. Are there any plans to work together with other producers in the future?
Marcel: At the moment there aren’t any plans, but when there is a request of somebody that I like to do a track with, then I’m up for it for sure!

Trance.nu: Are there any producers or singers that you would like to work with?
Marcel: I’m not so into producing vocal stuff myself, because I have the idea that it get’s too commercial if a Dutch guy is doing it. I mean, I don’t see nice, vocal, non-commercial dancetracks made by Dutch producers that much. Motorcycle for example, is a typical really cool vocal production. I don’t think that a Dutch producer would make a production like that so easy. I think that you have to be specialized when you do something with a vocalist. But however i just did a vocal production myself, it will be released by Purple Eye (Ferry corsten’s company) so just check it out if I need to do more of this…..ha ha (Babylon feat. Riny with “23 Minutes”)

Trance.nu: You already released some nice productions, are there already plans for a Marcel Woods artist album?
Marcel: No, there are no plans for an album. I think myself that I have to grow for that (as an artist). I need to have my own sound. I know that I’m on the right way, but first I want to be a high quality artist before I’m going to plan a whole album. Okay, we could do an album now, but I don’t want to make an album with all the things that I did, just to show ‘hey, look what I already did!’.

Trance.nu: Can we expect some new productions from you soon?
Marcel: Sure! I’m always busy in the studio, so there will be some new stuff very soon! The new Marcel Woods track is almost finished and furthermore there will be a new track from me called “23 minutes” on the Purple Eye label. I did a Marcel Woods remix from that one too.

Trance.nu: How long do you work on a production normally?
Marcel: Well, most of the time I finish a track in one week, but sometimes it’s faster and sometimes it takes some more time.

Trance.nu: What’s your favorite own production?
Marcel: That’s a good one… That one still has to come!

Trance.nu: What kind of equipment do you use in your studio?
Marcel: The Indigo Virus is my favorite piece of equipment for sure! Furthermore the Andromeda and my mixer the Sony DMX-R 100!

Trance.nu: Do you use only hardware or do you also use software?
Marcel: I almost only use hardware. Software I don’t use that much…

Trance.nu: In the past you remixed tracks from artists like Mike Robbins, Geal, Marco Joosten etc. Can we expect some new remixes from you in the near future?
Marcel: I’m not a big fan of making remixes to be honest. Mostly you will get a lot of requests after you had a hitsingle. For example: after the release of ‘Time Is Running Out’, I got over 10 remix-requests in 2 months time… The problem is that everybody wants to have a remix with the same sounds in it and then I have to mix it with their vocals … I’m not getting happy from that and I don’t think that the original artist will be very happy too. I don’t want to be a copy of myself, so that’s why I don’t do that much remixes and I’m just trying to do my own thing. But when I really like a track, I sometimes ask if I can remix it. For example when I heard the Mike Robbins track ‘Are You A Freak?’. They gave me a CD with the track to test it in my sets. When I heard it I was like ‘Wow! I really like this one!’, so I asked them if I could make a remix. And they liked it, so that was fun to do! But requests… most of the time I have to say no…

Trance.nu: Is there any track that you would like to remix?
Marcel: Hmmm… there is one track… that’s ‘Lyod - Vanquire’. A very old track, but I don’t think that I dare to touch this one…

Trance.nu: Together with Walt you produced a track called ‘Te Quiero’. The style of this track doesn’t really fit in the list of solo tracks that you released on the ID&T label. What is your own favorite style to produce?
Marcel: I personally prefer to produce a mixture between techno and trance. Call it tech-trance myself.

Trance.nu: Do you have any other hobby’s next to your music?
Marcel: Well, there is not much next to music in life, is it? Hahaha!
But most of my spare free time I spend with my girlfriend.

Trance.nu: What can we expect from Marcel Woods in the near future?
Marcel: I keep on going with the stuff that I’m doing at the moment and we will see what’s going to happen. The sky is the limit!

Trance.nu: Where can people see you behind the wheels of steel in the next few weeks?
Marcel: Dance Valley the Winter edtion, the Matrixx in Nijmegen, afterclub Zino in Tilburg and for the rest just check my website!

Trance.nu: Thank you very much for your time and good luck in the future!
Marcel: Thank you too!

Cosmic Gate & Emma Hewitt - Be Your Sound.

Cosmic Gate re-team with one of dance music's hottest vocal properties for the first major single to be taken from their forthcoming artist album 'Wake Your Mind'.
(Released On Black Hole Recordings 17th October 2011)
Yeah I miss you. I miss us. I miss having you to talk to whenever I wanted. But I know I have to move on, because this is pointless

I've always been afraid of losing people I love. Sometimes I wonder, is there anyone out there afraid to lose me?

I hate how we went from telling each other everything to acting like the other person doesn't even exist.

You attract people with similar attitudes and beliefs based on how you act. Be positive and positive things will happen to you.

I'm going to smile like nothings wrong, talk like everything's perfect, act like it's all a dream, and pretend it's not hurting me.

Best 3 tracks from Universal Religion Chapter 5

Three epic Tunes from on hell of an album

Benny!

Benny Benassi .. i dont even know where to start bottom line this guy said it loud and clear "IM ELECTRO"

For Armin fans

Regarding the DJmag top 100 polls .. after a wild guess about whos gona top it "Armin Van Buruun" of course, but i wonder why people always vote for armin lately? Is it cuz of ASOT? ASOT or a state of trance: is a 2 hour compilation of many tracks takes place on many radio stations every week, Armin is the host BUT every single song played got nothing to do with him. He only publishes the songs for the poor unknown DJs and he takes credit for doing that. Have you guys ever noticed? Hold on a second this strategy is good and its actually working + armin is really good but the people rarely listen to an armin track .. mostly tracks played by armin so he miss guides your given credit not for the DJ who played the track but for armin. The war between 1st and 2nd place is not tense anymore between Tiesto and Armin, people forgot whos the king of trance.

Another Gig by Marcel

Long live Techtrance

An Interview with Tiesto

TiĆ«sto, Mixmag's #1 DJ of All Time, doesn't rest easy even with titles like that. His College Club Life tour has been roaring through American universities for the past couple of weeks and climaxes this weekend at Home Depot Stadium, a 26,000 capacity venue, with the event billed as the largest single DJ headline show in U.S. history.
After a whirlwind year that included being on the cover of Billboard magazine, with an eye-popping yearly salary routinely deployed by journalists to demonstrate the still growing draw of dance music, Tiesto took some time to talk with Mixmag about his career changing club experience, social media, and if he'll ever make an album of minimal techno.
You're playing to 26,000 people this weekend. Even after doing this for so many years, what goes through your head when you first go onstage and actually see 26,000 people waiting to see you?
Well, it never gets boring. I've seen it many times, but it 's always a whole new crowd, and this is a whole new thing for America as well. America isn't used to DJs playing stadiums. This is the first one. It altogether makes it very exciting.
How have the crowds on the current tour acted different than in the past considering the tour caters specifically to American college students?
The difference is that they are a lot louder, a lot more energy and open to everything I play. They're super enthusiastic about the music and it's inspiring.
Fans talk about trance with terms like 'epic' or instrumental 'grandeur'. What feelings or emotions are you trying to evoke with your music?
It's just the whole life feeling, living in a club. But it can be outside as well, of course, but it's more like a distinct package, a way of living. The lyrics, the melody, the rhythm, the energy. It's just about good vibes.
How would you approach a set differently playing in a club versus a stadium?
Club would give me more time to do a softer approach to the music. I can have more patience, where for a big outdoor show I always play two hours, sometimes three hours, and I am for more big tunes. Bigger melodies, bigger vocals. In a club you can be more intimate.
Your music has changed over the years. What events in your life took place, personal or professional, that contributed to the evolution of your style?
Quite a lot actually! I was going out to clubs a few years ago. And when I was there, I heard the DJs play and they were playing more of everything. It wasn't just one style of music they played, they played all kinds. I really liked that approach, so it's my goal to become more like that myself. I don't want to say an 'open DJ' – that sounds weird – but to get influenced by other stuff outside of the trance world. More indie vocals, electro DJs, and house music. It was a big eye-opener for me and my production started to shift to where I'm at now.
Is there anything that inspired to start to do more vocal-based productions? So much of your music the past few years is vocals-heavy compared to earlier work.
I think it's important in my sets because I like to have lyrics in my sets nowadays. But I also still make instrumental ones, 'Work Hard, Play Hard', 'Maximal Crazy'. So those instrumentals are still out there as well.
Speaking of 'Work Hard, Play Hard' and 'Maximal Crazy', those are titles that blatantly encourage hedonistic partying. How do you like to party when you aren't behind the decks getting 26,000 other people to party?
I would be in the front row! I would be right there with them, jumping and screaming and singing along.
Are you still able to go out and see other DJs?
Yeah, if I have time. I love dance music, so like at festivals, I always am backstage watching other DJs. That's my favorite part. You meet everybody, talk about music, listen to each others sets. Like at an Electric Daisy festival, or Creamfields in England. They're always a few of the highlights in the year because you catch up with the other DJs that are playing.
You mentioned you like putting vocals in your music because they work better in your shows. Do you have any plans to go further and try to penetrate the American pop mainstream in the way someone like David Guetta has?
No! I don't have that desire at all, actually. I feel like I'm more of an underground DJ compared to the pop/mainstream world. My music for some people is commercial type music, but in general it's not radio friendly. I like where I am. I don't need to be in that more poppy arena, it doesn't fulfill me to be honest. I'd like to make a great track and have people love it, but if it's number 1 or in the top 100 or lower, it doesn't matter to me as long as when I play it out, the reaction of the crowd loves it as if it was number one for them
You're as underground as you can get while still playing to 26,000 people, I would say.
Yeah, exactly. But what do you call that? Am I commercial underground?
What do you think has led to the American dance scene exploding into the mainstream the last few years? What do you think are the factors? You've been playing to huge crowds in Europe for years now.
I think the whole exposure through social media helped a lot. Three or four years ago, people wouldn't really be exposed to dance music here. All they'd hear is the radio stuff and MTV, but MTV here only had reality shows. It's called 'music television'! But it was all that reality crap. Now with Facebook, Twitter and others over the past few years, it's easier to pass things around. You can put up a video of electronic music you like, and if your friends love it then it's a snowball effect.
And there's been such a large segmentation of dance genres as people discover it. Is there any specific type of electronic music your fans would be surprised to know that you listen to?
No, not really. Because whatever I like I can play, nowadays. Even if I like a dubstep song. I used to like a Skrillex remix of 'Cinema' by Benny Benassi, so every big show I started playing it in my sets every chance I would get. It probably wasn't the most exciting things for the fans, I think, but in general if I like something electronic it ends up in my sets or my radio show.
Do you think your fanbase would be closed off to the idea of you making, say, a minimal techno record? What restrictions have come with your level of success in terms of the audience response to risks you take?
Well, I think I would prove to them that I took a huge risk with the 'Kaleidiscope' album. Because when that took place, when it was initially released, everybody was shocked. It was not trance, people couldn't place it, there was no pop music. It was an album a lot of people had to get used to. And for me it was a milestone in my career that took me in a different direction. I would play it after its release and people loved the style. And it's being growing over the last two years. I've been producing a lot of new music and playing it. I feel like after 'Kalediscope', for the next album I could do whatever I want. If I wanted to release a minimal techno record and I believed in it myself that it sounded great and could be a success, I would do it.
Mixmag readers voted you the #1 DJ of all time. You were on the cover of Billboard. After so many years of DJing, what meaning do those sorts of accolades hold for you anymore?
Well, it's a nice compliment, really. It's nothing overwhelming. It's nice, but it's not about the hype, it's about playing for people and hearing a response. You could be the smallest DJ in the world for ten years but still sell out clubs or venues. What is that title really worth? It's all about people listening to my music, or the reactions I get from my Twitter when I play, that for me means the most.
Before you play to that huge crowd this weekend, what's your pre-show ritual and what's the first thing you do when you get off stage?
My pre-show ritual is very routine. I've been preparing for my set the past few weeks testing out stuff. During the day I'll listen to all the tracks and get a sense of my set, and about an hour before the show I'll watch the other DJs before me, maybe have a few drinks, meet a few people. I don't think about a lot of stuff before the show, it's more relaxing time. After the show is the same thing. I go back to the dressing room and hang out for a bit, think about the set, talk about it, meet more people, meet the promoters, and then go home. It's very simple, actually.
What do you think you'll do when this tour ends? What are your plans for 2012?
Well, I think the first six months I will be doing some different stuff. I'm not going to do many gigs, just a couple of club gigs here and there to stay in shape, but in general I'm going to focus purely on production. I want to make more music over the weeks and explore other stuff. I have a lot of plans for next year, but not necessarily DJing.
